Open Books is an award winning nonprofit and social venture that that operates an extraordinary bookstore, provides
community programs, while mobilizing passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond. Open Books founded in 2006 and is a certified 501(c)3 organization.
Open Books helps inspire children and teens by providing high impact literacy programs, encouraging them to enjoy reading and writing, sharing their personal stories and also preparing them for college and the workforce.
Open Books serve over 3,000 students each year.
Open Books is also a unique non profit model with a retail brick and mortar bookstore and online book selling component. Open Books collects thousands of books each month from donors, and sells them in their store or online. All the money they make from selling those books goes to supporting the organization and it’s mission, to bring awareness to the issue of illiteracy and to enrich the lives of others through reading, writing and the incredible power of books!
