SOTR believes that their collective power and creativity as young mothers & women of color can challenge racism, classism, machismo, heterosexism and other beliefs and practices they face that lead to inequality and oppression. SOTR utilizes popular education, community organizing, spiritual grounding, cultural values and traditions to provide a youth-led program that cultivates a safe space for healing, nurturing self-growth, social and economic justice. Sistas on the Rise works with sisters living in poverty and within the control of the welfare system to create alternatives that will allow their members to sustain economically instead of revolving in the cycle of poverty.
FG: How would you describe your personal style?

AW: Janis Joplin meets Jackie O. I love all things feminine, long necklaces, flowing skirts and anything flowered. Yet, I still like classic lines and a clean fit.

FG: Name 5 items every woman should have in her closet.

AW: A great Trench coat-classically styled, black pencil skirt, perfect party dress (does NOT have to be a ‘Little Black’ version),a pair of flattering Jeans and a classic pair of pumps!

FG: Who is your fashion icon and why?

AW: Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s ‘Rear Window’. She’s feminine and yet still classic. I love her full skirts and the detailing of her outfits. All of her garments also FIT will and flatter a feminine figure. Finally, she uses beautiful pops of color!

FG: What fashion trend is your least favorite?

AW: Short dresses. Almost nobody has the legs to look really good in a mini dress. Most of us that wear them just shouldn’t.

FG: What the weirdest item in your wardrobe?

AW: I have a beautiful purple and gold silk, quilted jacket that my mother brought home for me from Kazakstan. It’s definitely weird, but I love it!

FG: What is your style philosophy?

AW: Dress simply and have one ‘feature’ item to spice up your outfit. All basics is boring. And too much ‘exciting’ clothing in an outfit is too much. I like a basic outfit with one exciting feature. For example, I have a beautiful floral jacket that I wear with simple jeans and pumps. I also have a sequined skirt that I wear with a grey t-shirt and flats. 7.

FG: How would you describe your personal style?

JM: My style is casual chic with a bit of an edge. I am almost always in some variation of jeans and a t-shirt but love to add something interesting to the mix. I dress to reflect how I feel about myself and how I would like others to see me: solid at my core but with a bit of mystery! A statement necklace or funky shoes can take an outfit to the next level without looking like you tried too hard. When I’m not in jeans and a tee, I love wearing dresses. What could be sexier on a woman?

FG: Name 5 items every woman should have in her closet.

JM: A great-fitting jacket that nips in at the waist, a fabulous pair of designer jeans that make you feel fantastic, leg-elongating nude pumps, a gorgeous handbag, and a dress that makes your body look even better than it is!

FG: Who is your fashion icon and why?

JM: Rachel Bilson has this effortless California style that I love. Her everyday look is so approachable yet chic and she’s not afraid to experiment with style in her evening wear. She is a tomboy and sexpot all wrapped up in one!

FG: What fashion trend is your least favorite?

JM: I really don’t like the boxy tops with batwing sleeves that are everywhere right now. The volume overwhelms petites like myself and can make you look bigger than you are on top. I prefer figure flattering shapes that show off a woman’s curves.

FG:What the weirdest item in your wardrobe?

JM: Probably a silk mandarin-collared blouse my husband brought me back from Thailand. It’s lovely but doesn’t fit in with the rest of my closet and looks just terrible on me!

FG: What is your style philosophy?

JM: Don’t blindly follow the trends. Wear things that flatter your body, make you feel good, and reflect who you are. Communicate to others who you are through your style.
